THE SOCIAL CUP
SINCE 1897
Our Story
Hamodava was originally started in 1897 as a Salvation Army social enterprise producing fairly traded tea in Australia. They used tea leaves imported from Sri Lanka, then called Ceylon. In one of the primary languages in Sri Lanka, Sinhala, the word Hamodava means “Army”, so Hamodava Tea was “Army Tea”.
When the Salvation Army started a Fairtrade coffee enterprise in 2016, we revived the Hamodava brand for the 21st century. Now you can enjoy a Social Cup of Hamodava Coffee right here on Cuba Street. You can read more about our history here!
